The house foundation was begun in 1816 while Jay was still in England. It was completed in 1819 and distinguished by a concave entrance niche--a feature to reappear in several other works. Lafayette may have given his 1825 address from the acanthus balcony. Jay also built the Savannah Theatre and the Branch Bank through his connection to Richardson.
