An Enduring Mystery
The Lost Portrait

Those interested in Jay have made much of the entry "Mr. Jay $50" in Charles Fraser's account book for the year 1820 when the two were in Charleston. There was more than one Mr. Jay in 1820 Charleston. Does this entry refer to ours? If so, was it an ivory portrait miniature and where is it now?

The Reverend Jay left "a portrait of his father" to grandson Ernest. Who was the artist? Where has this gone?

Jay was an intimate of William Etty at a time when Etty was still struggling for recognition. Although Etty painted Jay's relatives while he was in America, nothing is known of Jay being painted by him at any time or that they ever met again after 1817. Yet, York Art Gallery claims they have an Etty portrait of Jay, the same one suggested by Hannah Lerski in 1983. But, is it an Etty, and/or is it Jay?

What does this mean? So far, nothing. We know what some of Jay's relatives looked like. Did Jay resemble them?
