Jay built his version of a Charleston single house in 1820 for Judge William Mason Smith. Its virtual twin is the one Jay built for merchant Joseph Turpin Weyman.

Receipt

Mid-19th century additions (which included the filled third-floor corners) crumbled in the 1886 earthquake—the Jay core of the building stood firm—revealing the stairwell dome.
